Who Can Be a Member

Membership in The Villages Canoe and Kayak Club is open to all Village Residents possessing a valid Villages ID card, including seasonal renters.  See the Club By-Laws for full information and restrictions.

Dues are currently $15.00 per person payable via Paypal only, from May through April and are not prorated.

Requirements

Participants are required to have the strength and conditioning to do a 10 mile trip over 5 hours. It is expected that you will have the skills required to handle a canoe or kayak. Training programs are available through recommended outfitters for those that don't feel that they meet these requirements or want to improve their skills. PFDs (Personal floatation devices) are mandatory when on a club trip.

Members must complete a Membership Application and sign both a standard Villages Waiver of Liability, (regardless of whether you have signed one for another activity), and the Club Waiver of Liability, prior to participating in any trip.

All participants must abide by all applicable regulations for operating watercraft in Florida, including wearing an approved Personal Flotation Device, which will be provided with all rentals.

Where We Paddle

The rivers of Florida offer magnificent and varied scenery, with an opportunity to observe a wide variety of wildlife in a natural setting. You may see an endless variety of birds, river otters, snakes, manatees, alligators, deer, fox, wild monkeys, all kinds of turtles, fish of every size and lots of insects! The waters may be crystal clear, spring fed or dark with tannin. The flora varies widely from season to season but is always beautiful.

We typically choose Class B Rivers, which have a moderate current of 1-3 miles per hour, with tight curves and an occasional challenge. There may be deadfalls or obstructions to circumvent, and there will be a few spots for beaching, some marshy areas or wooded shores. Less frequently, the Club will canoe a Class C River, with more difficult conditions and a current over 3 miles per hour, strong sweeps, steep banks, possible rapids and obstructions throughout. Conditions can vary widely, depending on rainfall, and the Trip

Destination Reports on our website will provide the latest possible updates.
Like most canoe trips, you must be ready to paddle against the current, carry over an obstruction, encounter wind, rain and possible lightning. The bathroom is in the woods. Lunch is on the river, most times at a scenic setting, sometimes in the canoe. You may overturn or get wet!
